JOTTINGS TIP: DOWNPOUR
Sometimes it happens when you least expect it. You’re doing something else and splatt! It’s not just one little drop. You’re in the middle of a downpour.
A downpour of ideas for what you might like to jot about, that is.
As a brief afternoon downpour caught me off guard in the midst of taking some photos, this JOTTINGS TIP came to me.
CAPTURE IT WHEN IT HITS YOU
You don’t know how long that particular wave of inspiration will be with you, so get the ideas for future jottings down in some format. Keeping a small notebook in your purse/pocket or using the voice recorder on your phone will come in handy, so that those moments won’t pass you by.
I’m talking here about those times when a bunch of events or people flood into your memory, seemingly “out of the blue”. Think of them as giving you a topic or category, not all the specifics of the moment you might eventually be led to include in your jottings.
Last week, I seemed to be on a roll remembering childhood friends and some of our elementary school antics. I don’t know, though, if I’ll ever end up jotting about any of them.
However, just capturing the ideas (Emily, Debby and Shawn and walking home from school with the twins) will allow me to go there later and explore if my heart truly wants to preserve a story behind a specific moment...or more than one.
Sure, you can also be more intentional about planning out your jottings. Sitting still (that’s the harder part for me sometimes;) and actually asking yourself “What do I want to jot about someday?” can open up its own sort of downpour.
For example, I knew I wanted to pass on the stories behind certain family moments, so they were intentionally added to my Memory List. These may be quirky or deeply touching times that you want your children or grandchildren to know about, but you haven’t gotten around to sharing yet.
For me, they included:
~ Mom forgetting to put the cranberry salad on the Thanksgiving Dinner table…and the family tradition that grew out of it
~ Our family caravan walking in Dad’s footprints through the snow from their North Carolina cabin in the woods to the General Store when the power went out…and cooking breakfast in the woodstove
~ Seeing my husband’s face as he glimpsed our daughter in her wedding gown, holding her bouquet of roses…and what he whispered in the next moment
You have those, too. Go ahead and jot them down right now in your Memory List. That way they won’t be lost when those other memories start flooding in.
Whether it comes out of the blue or from your intention, welcome the downpour and the opportunity for capturing the stories behind the moments that truly matter to you!
Let’s give it a try and see how that feels…
