The familiar tune caught my ear as I headed out on the path around the lake. Passing the community park’s shelter, I was brought into a celebration to which I hadn’t received a formal invitation.
It was someone’s birthday and their family and friends had gathered with gifts, food and lots of balloons to wish them well.
As they clapped and cheered, the birthday boy blew out his candles and his Mom began to pass around the slices of cake. “Yum, that’s good!” was the last I heard as the path took me out of range.
That’s when a tiny voice came in from recent memory, singing “Do-ooo. Do-ooo.”
It was grandson Lincoln. In his very best 16 month old version, he was singing the “Happy Birthday to You” song.
It was 2016. With several recent birthdays in our family, Lincoln was becoming familiar with the sing-blow out candles-clap-eat cake-routine. Cap that off with one of his newest books, The Little Gorilla, ending with the Baby Gorilla growing into a large one year old and his jungle friends coming for the party.
Last week Lincoln carried the big book around his room, plopped down and began singing “Do-ooo. Do-ooo.”
Swaying back and forth with the tune, he wrapped up his rendition by leaning over the book to blow out the candles. Then clapping with glee, he toddled over to indicate that he was ready for the next step.
“Yum-yum!” Off he scurried to the door to most certainly be taken downstairs where he intended to dive into some delicious cake. He wasn’t disappointed, however, when strawberries were substituted and a stroller ride to the duck pond served as a distraction worthy of this grandmother of eight.
