Thought I was alone, but then I heard it. A rustling in the lower branches of the bushes at the edge of the woods where I was walking. Turning my head toward the sound, I wondered what critter would be that close to the path.
It was the weekend and lots of families had started down this trail ahead of me. Wouldn’t the noise of us humans scare away anything that might venture out from the protection of the woods?
Out of the blue they charged…
WHOOSH!
Two frisky medium-sized deer romped straight toward me.
At first, their frolicking consumed them. Weaving toward and away from each other as if playing a game of tag. Then they froze for a split second when they became aware of me so near.
Each turned tail making a u-turn away from me, one scampering to my left and one to my right as they disappeared back into the deep woods from whence they had emerged.
I realized I was holding my breath.
Then my thoughts started.
“That was close. What would I have done if they had come closer and had run into me?”
“I almost took the trail that goes into those exact woods. What if they’re there the next time I go that way?”
I was distracted briefly from acknowledging the beautiful awesome closeness I had just experienced with two of God’s prancing creatures. I had been in just the right place at the right time to get to experience that. Wow!
That’s when God nudged me from fearful hesitation into gratitude, from self-preservation and preparing for next-time mode into a “lighten up and frolic with Me” mindset:
“What’s with the what-if’s and worrying about what’s around the next bend? Instead, be in awe of what I bring into your life for you to enjoy, even in the briefest of experiences.
Don’t be afraid of ‘out-of-the-blue’ moments, always expecting them to bring a burdening for you or those you love. Something that will need to be fixed or requiring you to work your way out of the situation.
More often, it’s a blessing that comes to you seemingly out of the blue. Savor it and speak about it with others. Let it lead you into gratitude and expect Me to meet you in more unexpected frolics of fellowship.
Tag, you’re it!”
It’s so easy for us to go into worry, isn’t it? Even with all the evidence we’re given that it’s ALL under control. That’s why I love to look back at my God-connected Moments to remind myself of all the times God’s been there for me and that our connection can be deeper AND more fun!!
