Hard to believe it has been eleven years since we had to say good-bye to her…when what we had wanted to say was hello and so much more. All of us were forever changed from that moment on.
Even though my husband Chris and I were on vacation on this day a few years ago, we were united with other family members back home through what has become our family’s tradition: remembering our granddaughter Charlotte by sending balloons heavenward with a loving note that is, of course, totally inadequate in expressing our feelings. They did their own versions of the same.
It seemed to help a bit.
The next morning, however, I felt alone and in my own thoughts as I browsed through photos from the day before. Something caught my eye from earlier in the week.
What I hadn’t known was that Chris had taken a sunset picture of a father and his young daughter walking on the beach.
Seeing her hand in his took my breath away and released a downpour of tears. It was as if God’s love-whispers broke through my walls of trying to be strong with His tender reassurance:
“You are not alone in your heartache. Put your hand in Mine, My child, and allow Me to gently comfort you.
Be assured that even as you are silently wishing right now that your sweet Charlotte could have had a daddy-daughter moment like that, she has been having similar ones…with Me.
Still, I understand that you’re sad (and angry sometimes…it’s OK) that there wasn’t more time with her for any of you. Let your tears flow. I’m catching each one.”
