JOTTINGS TIP: CHANGING VIEW

After weeks of seeing the same view, something different popped out from the backdrop of sameness a few days ago. Where the hillsides along the interstate and the tree-lined streets within local neighborhoods had just looked green, now something seemingly new jumped out and caught my eye.

Gorgeous Fall color.

There was just no stopping those vibrant oranges, beaming yellows, and rusty reds from bursting forth. Sometimes all within the same block!

I wasn’t specifically looking for them, but there they were...and I was filled with appreciation and excited anticipation for where I would notice the NEXT something else.

The same thing sometimes happens to me along my jottings journey.

I might reflect on the moments I could be capturing next, and be overwhelmed by a blanket of sameness. More family experiences, more childhood memories, more times God’s love-whispers broke through into the midst of an ordinary day.

When I attempt to “think up” something to write about, it usually feels uninspired. More like a to-do list and less like listening to my heart’s desire.

That’s when I get out of my head and change my view.

Actually change where I am and what I’m looking at.

By going for a walk or a glide or a swing or a drive or a plunge in the hot tub, I’m giving myself permission to allow Something Else to lead.

CHANGE YOUR VIEW TO ENERGIZE YOUR JOTTINGS

That’s when something I hadn’t noticed before WILL catch my attention. It might be a scurrying chipmunk along the backyard fence that causes me to follow its playfulness with its chipmunk buddy. Perhaps the breeze on my cheek lifts my eyes to glance at fast floating clouds and then to notice how the leaves are floating down onto the grass so slowly in contrast. Maybe my ears pick up on the sound of a neighbor’s lawn mower or the mailbox lid’s closing after our delivery.

Who knows what it might be for you, and where it could lead you next when you get back to jotting?

Anywhere your senses take you can result in more energized jotting. You’ll be pepped up by what pops up for you during your break and that feeling can’t help but overflow into your writing. Have fun and let me know how that feels…
