My 85 year old Mom and my older sister Betty were both in good health. After not living near them for many years, we finally enjoyed lots of family time together. Mom and I spent much of each day looking through her old photo albums and reminiscing together.
“I can’t believe what you’re sharing with me, Mom...things that I hadn’t known about you.” Who knew she’d always been embarrassed to smile and that she had an unfulfilled dream to create her own business?!
As more and more memories begin to flow, so do our tears...mixed with belly laughs. Her never-tan fair skin turns beet red as she laughs so hard she burps and then hiccups. She reads to me from her favorite books, and shares her worries as we sift through mounds of paperwork. And now she wipes away another tear as she shares how she feels about the joys of getting to be a great-grandma and how much she misses my Dad.
For the first time, I feel like I’m really getting to know my Mom (her past and her present), and I feel so much closer to her. Mom is giving me a glimpse into her unique way of experiencing moments of life, and I LOVE getting to know her this way.
A few short years later, both my Mom and my sister had passed away. My sister had been the one who seemed to know all the facts about our family history, but I’d always wanted to know more of the behind-the-scenes snippets of story. I was blessed to have had that reminiscing time with Mom to learn MORE of my family’s story!
IF I HADN’T STARTED JOTTING DOWN BITS OF IT,
THAT WOULD HAVE ALL BEEN LOST, FOREVER.
Mom’s perspective on growing up, dating, parenting and grandparenting...her story and how it connects to mine. Now it’s safe and preserved, for generations of family to enjoy…along with my own mini-stories I’ve been jotting down.
It breaks my heart that so many personal and family moments aren’t being captured...to be re-lived, shared with family and friends, and passed on!
I almost waited too long to preserve things only I know about my Mom’s living of life.
I almost waited too long to start capturing my own unique-to-me way of being me. But I didn’t, and I’m so glad I can share how fulfilling it is with you!
